84 PPP workers sent to jail

RAWALPINDI, Nov 10: Two local courts on Saturday ordered the detention of 84 activists of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in Adiala Jail, while 10 women workers were granted bail.

MNA Fauzia Habib was re-arrested after she along with four other women was granted bail by Special Judicial Magistrate (City) Chaudhry Taufiq against surety bonds of Rs30,000 each.

These women - MPA Azra Bano, Akhtar Bibi, Adiba Kosar and Uzma Jehangir - and 45 other men were booked by the City police on the charges of violating section 144, unlawful assembly and maintenance of public order section 16 on Friday as they tried to reach Liaquat Bagh.

The police arrested the Ms Habib soon after she left the court, saying they had received her detention orders under 3 MPO. However, officials told Dawn that she was again released later in the evening.

The judge sent 45 men, including Sardar Shaukat Hayat, a former president of Lahore High Court Bar Association Rawalpindi division and PPP ticket holder in NA-56, to the jail for seven days.

Special Judicial Magistrate (Waris Khan) Masood Ahmed Janjua released five women activists of PPP against the surety bonds of Rs30,000 each. The five women were identified as Amina Zaidi, Dr Nagina Sadaf, Farah Azam, Sajida Mir and Shenaz Kanwal.

The judge sent 39 activists, including MPA Aamir Fida Paracha and PSF leader Khalid Nawaz Bobi, to Adiala Jail for seven days. The judges came close to the three prison vans carrying the political workers near the district bar office, took their attendance and passed orders about the bails and judicial remand.

Meanwhile, one of the detainees reportedly suffered a heart attack and was shifted to a hospital by the police.—A Reporter
