UN reiterates call for return to democracy

By Masood Haider

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 7: UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has reiterated his call to the government of Pakistan to return to “democratic rules and procedures as soon as possible” and “release immediately all the detained political leaders, lawyers, and also the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion and Faith (Asma Jehangir)”.

The reiteration of the secretary general’s stance came after Pakistan’s ambassador to the UN, Munir Akram, had rejected the UN position saying “We think it’s an internal matter and the United Nations has no business to pronounce itself on that”.
