KARACHI, Nov 7: Organisations representing fishermen on Wednesday announced the launch of a country-wide campaign from Nov 21 to resolve the problems confronting the fishing industry and the people associated with it in Pakistan.
This was stated by the office-bearers of the Fishermen Unity Foundation (FUF) and Bona Fide Fishermen and Boat Owners’ Association (BFBOA) in a joint press conference at the Karachi Press Club.
FUF General-Secretary Mohammad Siddique Boti said the fishermen will unite on a single platform to formally launch a campaign for the betterment of the community. The drive will continue till the welfare of the fishermen community is achieved, he added.
He also called for subsidies to fishermen in diesel, ice and fishing equipment as well as lifting of the fishing ban during June and July.
Mr Boti termed the prevailing crisis in the fishing industry, which, he said, has left millions of fishermen unemployed, as a conspiracy against the industry.
He also called for increasing the prices of fish, a probe into the alleged plunder of the Fishermen Cooperative Society and improvement of the commission collection system.—APP
