LARKANA, Nov 6: The Larkana police on Tuesday sent 51 people, including 17 lawyers, 16 Jamaat-i-Islami activities, nine workers of Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz, to central prison in Larkana.
They were detained for 30 days under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) after the DPO Larkana had received faxed instructions from the high-ups, said the sources.
It was learnt that police had drawn three categories of the arrested people.
The detention period of some would be extended while some would be released on personal bond and some on giving undertaking for not holding demonstrations.
The PPP workers who gathered at the Civil Lines police station raised slogans while the lawyers were being shifted to central prison.
MPA Ayaz Soomro, president of PPP Larkana district and District Bar Association refused to sit in the prison van and later taken in a car to the prison.
The PPP sources told Dawn that some leading advocates and political workers of PML-N and National People’s Party were detained for 90 days under MPO.
Ratodero police had also picked up Nisar Akas Samo joint secretary of the Ratodero press club. Local journalists met the DSP but he refused to release him.
MNAs, MPAs of PPP Anwar Bhutto, Ramesh Lal, Khalid Iqbal Memon, Hizbullah Bughio, Haji Munwar Abbasi, Aziz Jatoi, Mujdid Isran met the arrested lawyers before they (lawyers) were sent to jail.
MUMTAZ BHUTTO: Chairman Sindh National Front (SNF) Mumtaz Ali Bhutto here in a statement on Tuesday said that the imposition of emergency in the country would only benefit rulers, Asif Zardari and Ms Benazir Bhutto while the people would continue to suffer.
He claimed that that the Supreme Court was about to announce verdict against National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO-2007) and declaring election in uniform of Gen Musharraf as invalid.
He said the imposition of emergency would provide chance to PPP, MQM and PML (Q) to reap maximum benefits.
He urged the people to come out from their slumber and support honest leaders.
