TAXILA, Nov 6: In the ongoing crackdown against the legal fraternity and opposition parties, police arrested two lawyers and two political activists in Taxila, Wah Cantt and Hassanabdal on Tuesday.
Those arrested were PML-N district information secretary Khalid Mehmood from Hassanabdal, Humayun Khan (PML-N) from Taxila, Syed Guftar Shah Advocate of PTI from Wah Cantonment and Murad Shah Advocate from Taxila.
Police backed by officials of some security agencies also raided the residences of opposition activists but they had already gone into hiding. Interestingly, the police did not go after PPP leaders and so far none of its office-bearers or activists has been arrested.
Meanwhile, the lawyers continued their strike for the second consecutive day and boycotted the courts on Tuesday.
The strike call was given by the Pakistan Bar Council and the Punjab Bar Council. The lawyers vowed to continue their movement against imposition of emergency and for restoration of the judiciary and release of detained lawyers. They also resolved to continue their protest despite large-scale arrests, especially in Lahore and Karachi.
Police on Tuesday besieged the court complex and launched strict checking at the entry and exit points of the city and allowed only those who proved their identity.
ATTOCK: The police shifted the arrested lawyers and political leaders to Gujrat, Gujranwala and Faisalabad jails on Tuesday.
Sources said police shifted District Bar Association president Advocate Rana Afsar Ali Khan to Gujrat jail and Advocate Ahmad Shah to Gujranwala jail after keeping them at the Pindigheb police station overnight.
