HYDERABAD: Call for lifting of emergency

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, Nov 6: Leaders of the Sindh chapter of the People’s Labour Bureau Pakistan, Lal Bux Kalhoro and Sagheer Ahmed Qureshi, on Tuesday called the emergency a mini Martial Law, which had violated basic human rights as well as the rights of the working class.

In a press statement they said that the imposition of emergency had rendered a telling blow to the democratic process and made the entire nation deaf and dumb by placing restrictions on print and electronic media.

They demanded that emergency should be lifted, general elections should be held on schedule, all the arrested lawyers, political leaders and activists and journalists should be set free and restrictions on electric and print media should be lifted.

JUI-F: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (F) leaders including Senator Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro and Maulana Taj Mohammad Nahiyoon on Tuesday condemned the arrest of the party’s press secretary, Ghulam Sarwar Buledi.

In a press statement they said that the country simply could not afford emergency and Martial Law and urged the rulers to withdraw their decision and hold general elections.

They condemned the arrests of political activists, lawyers and journalists and called upon all the political parties including PPP to unite on one platform to launch a joint struggle against emergency.

SNP: The Sindh National Party on Tuesday condemned the arrest of SNP lawyers’ forum leader, Sher Baz Khoso, and raids on the houses of other party leaders.

A spokesman for the party claimed that at least 180 party activists had been arrested after raids on houses across the province.

STP: The acting chairman of the Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party, Dr Abdul Hameed Memon, on Tuesday appealed to people to observe a shutter-down strike throughout the province on Nov 8 in protest against the imposition of emergency.
