EU debates energy strategy

PRAGUE, Nov 5: European representatives gathered on Monday in Prague to discuss if a “nuclear energy renaissance” was feasible to cut the European Union’s dependence on imported energy.

“This discussion is necessary to confront our shortfall,” Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek said, calling on France, Finland, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Italy and the Baltic countries to support a “nuclear energy renaissance.”

The participants gathered at the European Energy Forum will discuss a common energy platform and outline a plan on objectives for 2020 as well as commercial cooperation with Russia.

The conference is due to end on Tuesday after some 30 energy experts from various countries and representatives of national energy companies debate a slew of issues.—AFP
