Colt Headingly captures November Cup in style

LAHORE, Nov 4: Chestnut colt Headingly, sent with blinkers on, put up a smashing performance to win the November Cup ran over the sprinting distance of 1200m during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

The colt opened an odds-on favourite after the last-minute withdrawal of Princess Of Gujrat and justified his favouritism status, winning the feature event by a big margin of a distance from late rushing Royal Fish. A few metres yet to go before the winning post Charismatic was running second and at this stage it looked he mayng second and at this stage it looked he may finish second but jockey M. Zeeshan eased him and in the meantime the mare Royal Fish came from behind and dislodge him to third place. Motivator finished fourth among five starters in this sixth race of the day.

Owned by Lahore Race Club (LRC) chairman, Tariq Aziz the winner was piloted by jockey M. Hanif On his previous outing the colt was slow to take start and on Sunday he was sent with blinkers on and the experiment proved successful.

Fancied bay colt, Sher-e-Punjab landed the Mianwali Cup over 1000m under a superb ride from M. Hanif, who brought him ahead of the field soon after the start of the race and went on win in the same style. He defeated Reborn ridden by A. Alam by three-fourth of a length.

Chestnut filly, Miss Play finished third with Red Hot Fire completing the frame among eleven runners.

Fancied chestnut colt, Lucifer struck a grand form winning the Kotli Plate Class IV division II and III over 1200m. He beat Lovely Gate by five lengths. The gelding Volcano and the filly Julia Robert completed the frame among five runners.

Bay filly, Can Can Girl, was given an excellent ride by the riding boy Tariq Habib to win the Nursery Plate, a term race for two-year-old colts and fillies ran over 1000 metres. Trained by Haji Fazal Hadi, Can Can Girl beat favourite colt Vallenday by two lengths Miss Liza finished third.

Jockey M. Hanif gave a dazzling display of horsemanship bringing home three winners in a row. He rode Sher-e-Punjab in the Mianwali Cup (5th race), Headingly in the November Cup (6th race) and Lucifer in the 7th race. Headingly and Lucifer, also earned a double for owner Tariq Aziz , who did not attend Sunday’s races,. Khadim Hussain saddled both the winners.

The upcoming riding boy Tariq Habib and trainer I. Nawab were also accredited with a double each. Tariq Habib rode Cheeta Aya and Can Can Girl in the 1st and 2nd race. I. Nawab sent out Ikon and Cross Ruff in the 3rd and 4th race.

Five favourites won in a card of seven events. They were Ikon, Cross Ruff, Sher-e-Punjab, Headingly and Lucifer. Two events were won by long shots-Cheeta Aya and Can Can Girl.
