GUJRAT, Nov 4: Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi says he fully supports the imposition of emergency and promulgation of Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) by President General Pervez Musharraf to snub the activities of terrorists and extremists.

Addressing a public rally in Ajnala, some 30 kilometres away from here on Sunday, the chief minister said General Musharraf had imposed the emergency for the country’s stability, integrity, uplift and prosperity instead of fulfilling his personal designs and benefits.

The chief minister said the emergency would not harm anybody and all the state institutions would continue their routine work within their respective domains without interfering the authority or duty of the others.

“The general elections will be held on time and Pakistan Muslim League (PML) workers should start preparations for the elections,” the chief minister said and added that Banazir Bhutto and other parties wanted to flee but he would not let them flee and instead would defeat them in the elections.

The chief minister said the government had rendered a great service to the people of Punjab by doing massive uplift work in every nook and corner of the province.

He said his government had also got completed development projects worth billions of rupees in southern Punjab, part of the province which was neglected throughout in the past.

The chief minister inaugurated the provision of gas to Ajnala and its surrounding rural areas.

Later, he gave a cheque worth Rs1 million to a family of gas pipeline blast in village Dherke Kalan in which three people including an infant were killed during Ramazan.

MNA Chaudhary Wajahat Hussain, Punjab Education Minister Mian Imran Masud and District Nazim Shafaat Hussain were also present.

Earlier, the chief minister reached Ajnala two hours late than his expected time of arrival. Strict security arrangements were made for the public gathering and over 2,000 cops were deployed in and around the venue.
