Sialkot head for another defeat as HBL chase third win : Quaid-i-Azam Trophy

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 2: Sialkot were heading for another defeat after Test leg-spinner Danish Kaneria claimed four wickets to put Habib Bank in sight of third straight victory in the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship fixture at the Lahore Country Club in Muridke on Friday.

Sialkot, who won the championship the season before last, reached 30 for one in the second innings after being forced to follow-on on the second day of the four-day match. Replying to the bankers’ total of 369, Sialkot were bowled out for 165 in their first innings.

Kaneria, who will join the national side in India for the Tests at the end of the one-day series, took four for 82 in 17.2 overs. Slow left-armer Aslam Qureshi provided good support with three for 32.

Earlier paceman Mohammad Wasim finished with five for 110 as Habib Bank added 29 runs to their overnight score of 340-8.

Sialkot suffered an innings defeat against Multan in the previous round.

Abdul Razzaq’s first match since rescinding his decision to quit international cricket last week has been somewhat disappointing for the Pakistan all-rounder at the Sheikhupura Stadium.

After making only 30 in ZTBL’s first-innings total of 275, Razzaq bowled 16 wicketless overs for 28 runs as PIA closed at 193 for three with skipper Faisal Iqbal still batting on 44. Upcoming opener Khurram Manzoor hit 74.

Karachi Whites skipper Mohammad Sami’s prospects of being recalled to the national squad for the Indian tour as a replacement for the fellow injured paceman Mohammad Asif brightened up on Friday as he finished with three for 49 as SSGC were dismissed for 221 at the National Stadium.

The home side had already taken the first-innings lead by reaching 280 for eight despite SSGC’s medium-pacer Sohail Khan’s third five-wicket haul in as many innings after making an impressive first-class debut against Pakistan Customs in the last game.

Ariz Kamal converted his overnight score of 49 into 76 as Karachi Blues declared at 404 for nine before having Peshawar reeling at 59 for five at the NBP Sports Complex. Left-arm paceman Malik Aftab has so far captured three for 39.
