KARACHI: Suspected cleric remanded

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 2: A judicial magistrate granted a three-day remand of the Naib Peshimam of Masjid-i-Aqsa in Shah Faisal Colony, a prime suspect in the murder case of a 12-year-old boy who was found dead in the mosque.

The police on Friday produced Qari Manzoor Ahmed before a Link Magistrate, East, Yaseen Qadri. The cleric is accused of strangling the boy, Mohammad Anas, allegedly after a sexual assault.

According to police, the suspect has confessed to having killed the boy but they are still probing the case from different angles.

“So far we have concluded that it was an act of a single person but further investigations may reveal more,” said Inspector Baig, Senior Investigation Officer, Shah Faisal Colony police station.

The suspect after killing the boy hanged the body in the mosque so that the episode may look like a suicide but the area police suspected that there was more to it.

The police later registered an FIR (294/2007) under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code on initial findings of the post-mortem examination, which suggested the boy had been killed. The final autopsy report has been reserved till chemical examination of the victim’s body.

Inspector Baig said that police were very hopeful about completing the investigations within the next few days but the final report of the post-mortem would have to be taken into account before reaching any conclusion.

The medico-legal section of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre reserved the final report of the post-mortem till chemical examinations of the samples, which would further determine the way the boy was murdered.
