MACAU, Nov 1: Pakistan’s Mohammad Sajjad who had clinched a silver medal in the 60m hurdle race here on Thursday was forced to participate in a rerun of the event to finally settle for a bronze in the Macau Indoor Asian Games at the East Asian Dome here.
Sajjad’s joy of winning a silver medal for his country proved shortlived as the Thai officials lodged a protest to the jury that the Pakistani athlete had an early start which resulted in the fourth position of their athlete Janjai Narongdeech.
The jury then examined the replays and ordered a rerun of the race which saw the Pakistani athlete finishing third while the Thai runner improved his position to that of the runner-up.
Sajjad timed 8.02 sec compared to his earlier silver medal victory time of 7.84 sec. Sajjad’s effort, however, helped Pakistan in breaking the medal drought at the Games as the highly-rated home teams of snooker and chess failed to fetch any medal.Muhammad Imran, the second member of two-men Pak athletics team, proved a failure in the men’s 60m.—APP
