KARACHI, Nov 1: The birth anniversary of Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan III (Nov 2, 1877 — Jul 11, 1957) is being observed on Friday, says a press release.

Sir Aga Khan III, grandfather of the incumbent spiritual leader of the Ismaili community, Prince Karim Aga Khan, was one of the top leaders of the All India Muslim League who played a key role in the Pakistan Movement.

Born in Karachi, he was conferred the position of 48th hereditary Imam of the community at the young age of eight. During his entire life he served Muslims with his great intellectual and leadership skills and personal resources.

His contribution to the establishment of the Aligarh University for the Muslims of the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent was widely eulogised. Sir Aga Khan-III was the first president of the All India Muslim League and the first Muslim president of the League of Nations, renamed later as the United Nations. He rendered valuable services for the Muslim community in the fields of health, education, social development and economic rehabilitation.
