Oriola dies aged 79

PARIS, Oct 31: French double Olympic fencing champion of the 1950’s, Christian d’Oriola, has died at the age of 79.

Oriola, who died on Monday in Nimes, was individual foil champion at the Olympics at Helsinki in 1952 and at Melbourne in 1956.

The ‘musketeer of the century’ was also world champion in 1947, 1949, 1953, 1954, a record which remains unbroken in French fencing. He retired at the age of 32 after the 1960 Rome Olympics and later became a referee for ten years.—AFP
