KARACHI, Oct 28: Favourite five-year-old bay Tharkyee avenged his last defeat when he prevailed over four-year-old colt Moon Raker in a close finish to win feature event in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

In a late burst, he beat another strong contender by three-quarter-of-a-length. Seasoned rider Ghulam Shabbir II rode home the winner in a smart time of one minute 10 sec to present owner-cum-trainer Ehtisham with a winner. By doing so the rider also completed treble (Tharkyee, Powerful Gambler and Closing Argument).

In the last meeting, Tharkyee had settled for the third spot behind Royal King and Moon Raker.

Filly The Princes Arab and mare Voo Doo Doll followed the top two in similar order in a field of seven contestants.

In an earlier race, the four-year-old chestnut colt Quince made amends when he stormed to two lengths victory over colt Sir Jee to claim the supporting event.

The winner from the stables of Pir Pagara was piloted home by champion rider M. Nasir.

Colt Khyber was placed third finishing seventh lengths behind while bay Jawan Bakht completed the frame. The two were separated by a photo-finish.

Apart from the above two, three more favourites – bay Powerful Gambler, colt Play Boy and mare Closing Arguments – obliged the punters with fluent wins.

Powerful Gambler posted ten-and-a-half lengths victory over Daruwala to win hands down with Ghulam Shabbir II in the saddle. Shabbir’s third winner was mare Closing Argument who edged Leopard Of Arab by eight lengths. Similarly, Nasir steered colt Play Boy to four lengths win over filly Sweet Girl.

Nasir also ended the day with double (Play Boy, Quince).

With no form worth five-year-old bay mare Meri Paidagiree stunned all and sundry when she beat mare Eye Lady by neck to land the opener while colt Black Jack toppled Desert Hawk to claim the fourth race.

The KRC management was compelled to cancel the fifth race for want of competition as some horses were withdrawn.
