Kiwis start SA tour on winning note

BLOEMFONTEIN (South Africa), Oct 27: The touring New Zealanders crushed a South African Invitation XI by 216 runs with a day to spare at Goodyear Park on Saturday — but had concerns about the form of their top-order batsmen.

The Invitation XI, set to make 308 to win, were bundled out for 91 in their second innings. Shane Bond (three for 26) and Jacob Oram (two for 14) shared the first five wickets.

Twenty wickets fell for just 236 runs on a second successive overcast day.

The tourists were bowled out for 145 in their second innings before the South African side also found batting difficult on a pitch which had been under the covers until shortly before the start of play following overnight rain.

Opening batsman Craig Cumming made 67 for the Black Caps but no other batsman could reach 20. There were no big runs for the top order in the first innings, either, when captain Daniel Vettori top-scored with 99, batting at number eight.

Medium-pacer Jon Kent, who played in two one-day internationals for South Africa in

the 2001-02 season, took four for 47, while opening bowler Ethy Mbhalati claimed three for 53.

Skipper Morne van Wyk got the Invitation team’s second innings off to a lively start, hitting four boundaries in making 21 off 23 balls before edging Shane Bond to second slip in the fifth over to start a slump in which five wickets fell for 18 runs.
