KARACHI: Anatomy in parts

Published October 26, 2007

KARACHI, Oct 25: An off-beat and yet interesting exhibition of female body parts cast in plaster of Paris is on at the Canvas Gallery.

The sculptress Amna Ilyas, a 2003 graduate of the National College of Arts, Lahore, has employed a process called the “live mould and cast” to make parts of the female anatomy, instead of doing the entire body. The figures are all in white since the medium is white too. However, in one case where she shows three pairs of feet with shoes on, the middle pair has been sprayed in black, creating an attractive contrast.

Young Amna Ilyas teaches at her alma mater but she does more than that. She is also into photography, fashion designing, ceramics and making puppets. What is more interesting is that she is also an amateur kathak dancer.

The exhibition will continue at Canvas till Nov 1.—AN
