Probe into hostage reports under way

ISLAMABAD, Oct 24: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said on Wednesday investigations are under way into reports that a Japanese student taken hostage in Iran had been moved across the border into Pakistan.

Mr Aziz said he had no information to confirm if the reports were true, but Pakistan authorities were looking into them.

“We have no evidence that this is the case — but we are checking ourselves and investigating, and, if this is the case, we will work with the Iranians on the issue,” he told reporters.

He warned that Pakistan’s border with Iran was weak.

“It’s a huge and very porous border, elements are going back and forth,” he said.

“(But) once we get any information, we’ll share it with the Iranians.”

The Iranian government said on Sunday that 23-year-old Satoshi Nakamura had been taken out of the Islamic republic by his unknown kidnappers although it did not specify which country he had been moved to. Some media reports however have named Pakistan.—AFP
