KARACHI, Oct 23: German Consul General Hans-Joachim Kiderlen has said that the Sindh Madressatul Islam has played a historic role in spreading modern education in Pakistan in both the pre and post-partition periods.

Speaking during a visit to the institution on Tuesday, he said that he undertook the visit to better understand the education system in Pakistan as well as to learn about the historic institution. He also spoke on the German education system and the importance of the German language.

He was of the opinion that German should be taught in Pakistani educational institutions as the language had a lot to offer.

Lt-Col (retd) Taj Mohammad Memon, Principal of the Sindh Madressatul Islam, briefed the German delegation about the education system of Pakistan and also the history of the Sindh Madressah. He pointed out that in the past four languages were used as the mediums of instruction at the Sindh Madressah – English, Urdu, Gujarati and Sindhi – adding that Gujarati was no longer used.

He highlighted the role of some of the Sindh Madressah’s outstanding former students such as Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto, Allama I.I. Kazi and others.

He said that Allama Kazi had married Elsa, a German lady, while the Sindh Madressah’s main building had been constructed in the German Gothic style in 1887.—PPI
