Bridge team title for Candyland


KARACHI, Oct 22: Candyland captured the weekly team event of the Karachi Bridge Association by accumulating 101 victory points (VPs) at the Aslam Memorial Hall on Sunday evening.

Candyland had services of Hamid Mohiuddin, Ziaullah Baig, Mubashir Puri and Hasan Askari.

They started their run with a convincing victory over Pasha 20-10, and then defeated Irfan 25-5 and Zeenat 22-8 before receiving a 14-16 injury by Aces.

In their last game, Candyland outclassed Data Steel 23-7.

Enjoying the services of Abdul Ghaffar Qureshi, Abdul Khaliq, Hasan Sajjad and Syed Ameer Hasan, Aces secured second spot with 91 VPs.

They beat Abedies 25-2 and Giants 25-3. In the third and fourth round matches, they overcame Data Steel 18-12 and Candyland 16-14.

However, Zeenat marred their march to victory stand in the fifth round. Aces lost 7-23.

Giants finished third with score of 90 VPs. They outpaced Puri 25-1, Irfan 21-9, Rais 19-11, Abedies 22-8, but lost second round match to Aces 3-25.

Masud Mazhar, Shahin Iqbal, Mohsin Chandna, Khalid Mohiuddin and Azwerul Haq played for Giants.

In the twenty pairs’ contest, Irfan Saadat-Tanvir Mazahir, competing from the North-South direction, scored 58.59 per cent to grab the top position.

Iqbal Hyder-Nuri Pasha finished second with 58.56 per cent score with Ahmed Hasan-Mushahid securing third place with 53.60 per cent score.

From the East-West direction, the title went to Hasan Sajjad-Zafar Zaki, who scored 57.74 per cent, followed by Hamid-Ziaullah Baig (55.76 per cent) and Anwer Gheewala-Dr Sarfaraz (53.46 per cent).

Meanwhile, the Karachi Club Midweek bridge pair contest will be held on Tuesday at 6pm while the Karachi Bridge Association will host the Data Steel-PBU Individual bridge championship at the Aslam Bridge Hall on Friday at 5pm.
