LAHORE, Oct 21: Fancied bay filly Princess Of Gujrat, in a fine display of speed, won the feature event of the eighth Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

The race was contested over 1400 metres.

Leading all the way right from the start, under jockey Javed Iqbal, the filly beat Lahore Race Club chairman’s colt Headingley, piloted by champion jockey Shahid Rehman, by a big margin of eight lengths. Headingley was slow to take the start.Charismatic and Discovery, who came staggering far behind, completed the frame.

The winner clocked the fast timing of one minute 26 1/5 seconds. This was the fifth race of the day.

A race earlier, 40 to 100 favourite bay filly Lovely Dunit came with a late run to win the class-five division-one handicap race over 1100 metres.

Lovely Dunit, a daughter of Baker’s Gate, defeated Sharp Burg by two lengths. Richy Dancer and Miss Play finished third and fourth respectively.

Jockeys Shahid Rehman and Javed Iqbal shared the day’s racing honours. The former rode home four winners –– Mirana Choice, Lovely Dunit, Armida and lucky Cat –– while Javed won both the important events of the day. He guided colt Karam Pe Karam in Nursery Plate for two-year-old half-bred colts and fillies, and filly Princess Of Gujrat in the feature event.

Javed Iqbal is showing tremendous improvement in the saddle. He is currently at third position behind Shahid and M. Zeeshan on jockey’s statistics table for the current season.Backed horses made a clean sweep when a card of seven events took place.

Three-year-old gray filly Lucky Cat, who stormed home to beat bay colt Ikon by six lengths in the seventh race, gave trainer Haji Fazal Hadi a consolatory victory, who was having a lean season with only two wins.

Haji is yesteryears’ champion riding boy, jockey and many a times champion trainer.
