Rear Admiral dies in road accident

ATTOCK, Oct 21: Rear Admiral Shiekh Tahir Waseem, director general of the Maritime Technology Complex (MTC) died in a road accident here on Sunday.

Six of his family members, including his wife and son, were injured in the accident that took place near the Ghazi Barotha Hydropower channel on the Attock-Haji Shah Road, on Sunday evening.

The police said Rear Admiral Waseem was on way to his native village, Tajik, along with seven members of his family when a tyre of his official land cruiser burst and it overturned.

Rear Admiral Waseem died on the spot and his wife, son, brother and driver were injured. The Attock police and military officials rushed to the site of the accident and shifted his body and the injured persons to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Attock.

According to CMH authorities, his son, Asfar Sheikh, a class IX student, was shifted to the Military Hospital in Rawalpindi in a critical condition, while the condition of the other injured persons was stated to be stable.

At the time of filing of this report late Sunday night, the post-mortem was being conducted at the Attock CMH and his relatives and officials of the armed forces had gathered at the hospital.

Family sources said Rear Admiral Waseem had been promoted recently. He was the younger brother of Maj (retired) Sheikh Khalid and also a close relative of central PML-N leader Sheikh Aftab Ahmed. His funeral prayers will be offered at the Attock Eidgah at 2.30pm, after Zohar prayers, on Monday.
