LAHORE, Oct 19: Union leaders and lawyers have expressed their shock over the bombings at a Pakistan People’s Party’s rally in Karachi on Thursday in which over 130 people died.

PWC: The Pakistan Workers’ Confederation also joined the voice in condemning the attack and said federal and Sindh governments were obliged to investigate the incident so that the elements responsible for the attack were exposed.

PWC Secretary-General Khurshid Ahmad said industrial workers across the country were shocked over the attack which was aimed at frightening political parties and trade unions in pursuing their peaceful activities.

NTUF: The National Trade Union Federation said that the attack and huge loss of life spoke of the government negligence and dereliction of duty. At a meeting, federation’s chairperson Yusuf Baloch and secretary-general Mueen Nawaz Punnoo said the explosions at the procession showed the designs of extremists who were out to disrupt political and electoral process and prevent the establishment of democracy. The federation leader also urged PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto not toeing the policy of those powers whom the people of Pakistan hated the most. They said the PPP should rely only on the power of the people.

SCBA: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) announced joining the PPP’s three-day mourning to express solidarity with those who died in the attack.

SCBA Vice-President Sahibzada Anwar Hameed and secretary Syed Zulfiqar Ali Bokhari said in a press statement lawyers were in a state of shock over the tragic incident which caused the death of over 130 people and left another 550 participants injured. They said the incident also showed that the regime had failed to protect the life of innocent citizens and must, therefore, be dismissed. They also pleaded with the Supreme Court to take a suo moto notice of the tragedy by investigating the attack.

LHCBA: The Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) also condemned the incident and demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident so that the elements responsible for this tragic incident were exposed and punished. LHCBA secretary Sarfraz Ahmad Cheema said the tragedy demanded that all political parties sit together to plan a strategy in fighting out terrorists and extremists who had taken the peace their hostage.

NCJP: The National Commission for Justice and Peace also expressed its shock over the incident. Archbishop Lawrence J Saldanha and commission chairperson Peter Jacob demanded that the government should ensure the safety of the life of the innocent people.
