KARACHI: Kazmi files plea for disposal of dud cheque cases

By A Reporter

KARACHI, Oct 17: Civil rights campaigner Mohammad Iqbal Kazmi on Wednesday submitted an application to the court of Judicial Magistrate-I, East, Shamsuddin Junejo for disposal of two dud cheque cases which were registered against him at the Al-Falah police station.

The court has already granted Mr Kazmi bail in the cases. The court issued a notice to the district attorney and asked the complainant to appear in court on November 6 for arguments in the case.

A case (FIR No 147/07) was registered by a transporter, Abdul Hakeem, under Section 489-f, while the other case (FIR No 145/07) was registered by Riaz Hussain Shah, son of Syed Talib Hussain Shah, under Sections 420, 506-b and 489-f.

According to the applicant, he had cases registered (FIR No 132/06 and FIR No 161/06) at the same police station against Ghazanfar Riaz, son of Riaz Hussain Shah, his girlfriend Saba and an assistant sub-inspector, Mustafa Shar, under Sections 448, 354, 343, 506-b, 427/34 and 489-f.

He said that Ghazanfar Riaz had sold him a plot in the Korangi Industrial Area and had received Rs250,000, but it was later on discovered that the plot was forcefully occupied.

“When I asked for a refund of my money Ghazanfar Riaz gave me a cheque for March 31, 2006, but made an attempt to kill me as I neared the KESC office in Korangi on March 30,” Mr Kazmi claimed.

He said a police mobile appeared and police personnel witnessed the incident, but the accused managed to escape. A case (FIR No 48/06) was registered by the police against unidentified persons under Sections 427 and 324/34.

Mr Kazmi alleged that while he had gone to Sehwan, the accused had held his family hostage and taken away his household items, including the cheque book.

The household items, he claimed, were worth at least Rs1.2 million. Mr Kazmi said he was going to sue the police, but the idea was dropped on the assurance of SSP Niaz Khoso, who said the items would be recovered within five days, but this was not done.

He said the accused had issued fake cheques from his cheque book, but they did not carry his signature and he had already informed the officials of the banks concerned for non-payment.

“The cases against me are baseless and have been registered in a bid to bring me to a bargaining point, but I will never forgive the accused,” he vowed.
