Janu Manu becomes everyone’s darling by winning Eid Cup

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Oct 16: Fancied bay colt Janu Manu, trained by Azhar Ali, won the Eid Cup, ran over 1200 metres, during the day/night Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Monday.

Three-year-old Janu Manu, who is by Triple Eight, battled on courageously after being strongly challenged by well-bred filly Poly Cat in the final stretch to beat her by half a length.

When the two were striding neck to neck, it looked anybody’s race but Janu Manu prevailed finally for great delight of holiday crowd of equine connoisseurs.

Royal Destiny, who was withdrawn first on declaration of riders and included at the last moment, finished third, a distance behind Poly Cat. She nosed out Harry Can View to fourth position.

Jockey Shahid Rehman rode the winner while M. Zeeshan piloted Shoaib Tariq’s Poly Cat.

Janu Manu clocked relatively a fast timing of one minute 13 2/5 seconds to cover the distance. This was a class-IV division-III handicap race and the 6th in racing order.

Long shot chestnut gelding Perfect Promise, who is by habit runs in-and-out, won the Islamabad Cup over 1200 metres with difficulty.

He beat favourite filly Bold Act who did not act boldly, failing by a neck to catch front-running Perfect Promise at the finishing post.

Riding boy Atif Javaid, piloting Perfect Promise, gave no chance to champion jockey Shahid Rehman on Bold Act to move ahead.

Sharp Burg and Red Hot Fire completed the frame among ten runners. This was the first race of the day.

Shapely filly Lovely Dunit, who looked perfect like a picture in the paddock before the race, dug deep in the run to the line to capture the Islamabad Plate for class five division two animals.

She beat Hellen Of Troy by half-a-length after nosing out Mirana Choice to third place.

When jockey Aamir was beaten on Hellen Of Troy, race-fans started shouting that he pulled the filly deliberately. Even M. Zeeshan, the Lovely Dunit’s rider, at one stage did not look serious to win the race.

Jockeys M. Zeeshan and Shahid Rehman shared the day’s honours, bringing home a brace of winners. Zeeshan piloted Lovely Dunit in the second race and went on to complete his double, winning on Shah Rani in the last race of the day. Shahid rode Iconic, who provided him an armchair ride, and Janu Manu.

Favourite-backers burnt their fingers when only two favourites — Iconic and Janu Manu — emerged victorious in a card of seven events.
