Janu Manu tipped to capture Eid Cup

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Oct 12: Three-year-old colt Janu Manu is fancied to justify his presence in the Eid cup when the post-Eid day/night Lahore Winter Meeting gets under way at the Racecourse on Monday.

Races scheduled for Sunday have been postponed for a day in view of Eid and will now be held on Monday (Oct 15).

This son of Triple Eight out-of-Field Mouse, Janu Manu was beaten by Desert Prince on September 30 last on his first try out and should make amends this time and win from the improving mare, Royal Destiny and gelding Volcano. Three-year-old Honey Gal is a well-bred filly but making her first appearance after a long lay off since winning a race on May 6 last.

This will be the sixth race of the seven-event card down for decision in connection with the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations.

In the supporting event, the Islamabad Cup to be contested over 1200 metres there are eleven contenders barring last-minute withdrawals. Of them three come in the reckoning, on form and recent showing in races. They are Bold Act, Perfect Promise and Sharp Burg. Bold Act is a speedy animal but Sharp Burg enjoys handicap advantage in this class five race and the first in racing order.

The Islamabad Plate class V division II over 1200 metres has a dozen runners mostly off form. Of them three look on chance. They are Stride To Moment, Hellen Of Troy and Chakori Jaisa. Placed low in the weight scales Stride To Moment has edge over the others.

Iconic, who after winning, lost the race on objection by the horse placed second on Sunday last should have the better of stable-mate Armida, Rana Choice and Jewna in the third race to be contested over 1100 metres.

Bone Crusher beaten closely in his previous outing should make amends this time in the fourth race. Gold Dust and Bird Fly should make his task somewhat difficult while going over 1100 metres.

Titan, Tosca and Malang Aya are the pick of ten runners field for the fifth race. The first two belong to the same stable with Titan enjoying good reputation but has done nothing worth the name, may be this time?

Shah Rani, Shah Pari and Shim Jim attract attention in the seventh and last race and should fight it out in the same order.

Since the experiment of holding races on both tracks-dirt and grass-the same day, has proved successful last Sunday, Lahore Race Club stewards have decided to make it a permanent feature. Three races will be contested over the distance of 1200m and four over 1100m. The first three races will be held on dirt track while the remaining four on grass track.
