KARACHI, Oct 12: A total of 125 prisoners, one woman among them, were released from different prisons in the city under the remission announced by the president of Pakistan on the occasion of Eidul Fitr.
According the officials of the District Jail Malir, 95 prisoners kept in this prison benefited from the remission and 45 of them were released.
Of the prisoners kept in the Central Prison Karachi, eight were released and 82 others got their terms reduced under the Eid remission.
From the Special Prison for Women, only one prisoner was released and three others got their prison term reduced.
One prisoner was released from the Youthful Offenders Industrial School (juvenile jail) under the Eid remission.
The remission would benefit a total of 245 prisoners languishing in 20 different prisons across the province, APP quoting DIG Jails Col Tariq adds.
The president has announced a special remission of 90 days for prisoners undergoing life sentence in cases like murder while the others have been granted a 45-day remission.
According to the announcement, the prisoners aged 65 and above who have completed one third of their substantive sentence will get total remission except those involved in culpable homicide or terrorist activities. Female prisoners aged 60 years and above will also get total remission provided they have completed one third of their substantive sentence and are not involved in culpable homicide.
Children aged under 18 years will get total remission in case they have completed their substantive term except those involved in culpable homicide, terrorist activities, robbery, dacoity, kidnapping, anti-state activities and offences covered under the Hudood Ordinance.
The offenders convicted on or before August 13, 2007 will be entitled to remission.
