LAHORE, Oct 11: South African cricket captain Graeme Smith said his team is in strong position to win the second test against Pakistan and have a chance to win the series 2-0.

“We are in a strong position in the match will be trying wrap it up on Friday,” he told reporters after the fourth day here on Thursday at Gadaffi Stadium.

The South African captain expressed delight on scoring a century (133) and termed it special as it was his first three-figure score in the sub-continent.

“The conditions are quite different and tough here in the Sub-continent and scoring a century is always a good feeling. I feel pretty happy,” he said.

Smith said he was not surprised that Jacques Kallis was scoring so many runs - three centuries in two Test matches - and described his efforts as superb for the team..

“Kallis scoring that many runs does not surprise me as he is a superb player and is constantly helping the team in its achievements,” he said.

The touring team captain said his team was looking forward to score innings total of 400 runs which did not happen due to good bowling of Danish Kaneria and other bowlers.

Commenting on the lack of resources in the Pakistan team, Smith said said it was a bit odd for the home team to go into a Test match with just two fast bowlers. “In a Test match there is a lot of strain on pace bowlers and just two bowlers cannot stand up to the pressure,” he said. “We (the South Africans) played four pacers in both Tests and have batted with determination and stayed longer at the crease. It is however sad to see one of their bowlers (Asif) being ruled out of action.” — APP
