KASUR, Oct 9: Former District Nazim Rana Muhammad Hayat, who was declared disqualified by the Supreme Court on Monday for defaulting on taxes worth Rs16 million, is likely to file a review petition with the apex court on Wednesday (today).

The former district nazim belongs to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and was disqualified on an appeal moved by his rival candidate Rana Imtiaz Ahmad Khan of the ruling PML.

A panel of Hayat’s lawyers went through the apex court verdict on Tuesday and decided to prefer a review petition.

In the meanwhile, Dawn has learnt that Rana Muhammad Iqbal, a former provincial minister and Punjab PML-N vice-president, or Rana Muhammad Ishaq, a former Pattoki tehsil nazim, is likely to contest for the district nazim slot.

Javid Ahmed Betto, Hayat’s chief coordinator, told Dawn that their group still enjoyed majority in the house as more than 90 nazims out of 162 attended the budget meeting held at the office of district nazim on Monday. He said three local PML leaders including Sardar Abdullah Khan, Mohsin Jahangir, and Sardar Qamar had joined the PML-N recently.

On Tuesday, five nazims of the ruling PML including Ilyas Sindhu, Akbar Deedar Sindhu, Naseer Khan, Rafique Sajid and Amjad Tufail and other workers tried to occupy the office of distict nazim which was, however, foiled by the workers and nazims of the PML-N.
