KARACHI : Policemen testify in ASI’s killing case

KARACHI, Oct 9: An anti-terrorism court on Tuesday recorded the depositions of three policemen in the murder case of an assistant sub-inspector during a demonstration against the killing of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti in Pak Colony police limits on Aug 28, 2006.

Judge Abdul Ghafoor Memon of ATC-II, who is conducting the trial, recorded the deposition of SI Sharif Niaz, ASI Aslam Javaid and Head Constable Gauhar Abbas.

They said they were on duty when about 300 people staged a procession in Pak Colony police limits in protest against the killing of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti. Some of the protestors opened fire on the police, killing ASI Kahlid Jamil and wounding Constable Ikram. The police later registered a case (FIR No 139/06) against the protestors under sections 147, 148, 149, 186, 353, 427, 424 (Q&D) of the Pakistan Penal Code. Baadshah Jehan Langra, Anwar, son of Taj, Mohammad Yaqoob, son of Taj, Nabeel Baloch, Noorul Ameen and Farooq were nominated in the case.

The court adjourned the hearing for Wednesday when other prosecution witnesses would depose in the case.

Suspects remanded

Administrative Judge of the anti-terrorism court in Karachi, Justice Muhammad Ather Saeed of the Sindh High Court on Monday remanded two suspects to police custody till October 17 for their alleged involvement in two different cases of kidnapping for ransom and murder, including the assassination of former protocol officer of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz when the later was finance minister, adds PPI.

Accused Syed Kashif alias Sohail and Muhammad Ahmed alias Umer Ahmed were produced before Justice Ather Saeed by Anti-Violence Crime Unit officials for obtaining remand.

They along with absconding co-accused Aif and Rizwan and two others, stated to be the activists of a banned militant outfit, were charged with killing of Dara Feroz Mirza, Dr Hamidullah and Liaquat Hussain, the former protocol officer, who was posted at the National Bank of Pakistan as a vice-president. The suspects were arrested in Korangi by AVCU team on Oct 7.

Liaquat Hussain, kidnapped on way home from work, was later found dead in Gulshan-i-Maymar area. Dara Feroz Mirza of Noble Computers and dentist Hamidullah were kidnapped on Sept 14 and 20 respectively and later their bodies bearing torture marks were recovered from Mauripur and Korangi.

The investigation officer prayed the court to obtain the remand of the accused for further investigation. Granting the request, the judge sent them to police custody till Oct 17 and ordered their production before the court on the next date of hearing.
