BEIJING, Oct 8: Pakistan grabbed one more gold at the Special Olympics on Monday to take their tally to five gold and four silver here in Shanghai.
The pair of Anwer Husain and Ahmed Mani grabbed the top honour in Bocce as they beat Moroccan pair in male doubles final. The score was 12-8
In girls boubles first round, Pakistan’s Aysha Irshad and Aysha Kanwal beat Philippine pair Tema-File Rivera 12-8. They, however, lost in the second round to a Chinese pair by 6-12.
In the football event, Pakistan drew with Morocco as both teams managed to score one goal each. Pakistan’s solitary goal was netted by captain Asif Khan.
In the cycling event, Pakistan’s Omair Sarwar grabbed a silver medal in the 5km race.
Meanwhile, the much-awaited main rounds of tennis event commenced on Monday. Pakistan’s first match in the men’s singles event was against Egypt where Teleb Abdul-Rahim beat Pakistan’s Sheikh Rizwan 6-0.
In another mens singles match, Pakistan’s Kaleem Ahmed beat Oliver Brian of Austria 6-0. In men’s basketball league match Pakistan lost to Hungry 10-36 at Nanging Stadium.
The stage of league matches has now been completed and the competitions for medals will start from Tuesday.
In Badminton Pakistan won first Bronze when Waqas Javed pairing with Zobi beat Chinese pair in third & fourth position match.
Due to persistent rain in Shanghai many events could not be held and few were shifted to indoor facilities.—Agencies
