Dissolution of NWFP Assembly put off

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Oct 7: The NWFP chief minister has put off for the time being his plan to advise the governor to dissolve the assembly and has decided to first tackle the issue of no-confidence resolutions against himself and the assembly’s speaker.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the parliamentary party of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (F) chaired by Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani.

“We have decided to face the no-confidence resolution tabled by pro-Musharraf opposition parties against the chief minister and a vote on it will be held on October 8,” said provincial government’s spokesman Asif Iqbal Daudzai.

He said the meeting decided to take no-confidence motion moved against Speaker Bakht Jehan Khan of the Jamaat-i-Islami to its logical conclusion.

The meeting was attended by a dissident MPA of Pakistan Muslim League (N), Malik Imran, who unlike other four MPAs of the party has not resigned from the assembly.

The spokesman said that under the Constitution the speaker could be voted out through a resolution after giving seven days’ notice to him.

He said that the resolution might be taken up after Eid holidays.

Nine MPAs of JUI (F) gave notice of no-confidence against the speaker on October 6.

The assembly has also been without a deputy speaker since the resignation of Ikramullah Shahid more than a year ago.

After removal of the speaker, the assembly would elect a new speaker and deputy speaker following which the chief minister would give advice to the governor to dissolve the assembly, Mr Daudzai said.

About the fate of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, the spokesman said the alliance was intact but it would be without JI.
