KARACHI: Medical report clears cops of murder charge

KARACHI, Oct 4: The police investigation into the serious injuries caused to a rickshaw driver during an incident of crossfire between police and criminals is likely to be dropped as the medical report of the victim has suggested that the bullet taken out of his body did not belong to police.
Two constables of the Shamim Shaheed police station were booked and taken into custody by the Rizvia police after the incident on Tuesday night. The constables, Shamroz and Faraqat, had maintained that they had chased the criminals into Nazimabad No.2 where the exchange of fire took place. The rickshaw driver, who was passing through the locality, was caught in the crossfire. However, the medical report was awaited to establish whose bullet had hit the victim.
An official of the Rizvia police said the medical report was received from the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre on Thursday. It suggested that the single bullet that caused serious head injury to the 35-year-old man was of a TT pistol. The police were carrying their official AK-47 rifles and the criminals had reportedly used TT pistols.
“The victim has undergone a successful surgery and we would soon be able to record his statement,” SHO of the Rizvia police station Naveed Nasir said.
Regarding the case registered against the constables, he said the accused in the FIR (No.189/2007) registered under section 324 PPC (attempted murder) were now the unknown criminals. The two constables were given the status of witnesses in the FIR, he added.
Decomposed body found
Parts of the body of a young man were recovered by police in different areas of Site Town on Thursday.
Pirabad police station had received a complaint from the residents of a locality about the presence of an unattended bag.
Police took the bag into custody and upon unsealing it, they found the right leg and left arm of a man packed in it. Later, the Site police found the same kind of a shopping bag in another locality. The bag contained the left leg and right arm of the body.
“The third bag was found after sunset and contained some other parts of the body,” said SP Site Sohail Zafar Chattha. “We have examined the body parts and apparently they seem to be of a young man who might have been kidnapped and killed,” he said.
Facts would emerge after the DNA test of the deceased, he said, adding that officials of two police stations were trying to reach a conclusion through coordinating their efforts.
The police officer said that an FIR of the case would be registered on Friday after other legal formalities and inquiries.
