Redl smashes world record


VIENNA, Oct 2: Austrian diver Christian Redl announced he has set another world record in Mexico, diving to a depth of 60 metres in one minute and 46 seconds without oxygen, according to his personal website.

“It’s done! 60 metres in 1 minute, 46 seconds!” Redl, a three-time record holder in free-diving, announced on his website.

The dive took place on Sept 28, in the presence of witnesses, in Cenote Angelita, an underwater cave stretching vertically to a depth of 60 metres, off the Mexican Yucatan peninsula.

Redl has already set several free-diving records, including the record for longest distance covered under the ice, which he now intends to break again.

He was also one of the initiators of the underwater ice hockey world championship which takes place in Weissensee, in southern Austria, every year. —AFP
