Published October 3, 2007

LAHORE, Oct 2: The Free Legal Aid Committee of Punjab Bar Council has declared the death of a prisoner, Shaukat Masih, of Sheikhupura District Jail a murder and urged district and sessions judge concerned to take action in this regard.

The committee, headed by Rana Abdul Shakoor, visited the jail on the directions of Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on October 1 and learnt about the tragic death of Shaukat Masih.

The committee was informed that Shaukat Masih had died allegedly due to inhuman and unlawful behaviour of Sheikhupura DHQ hospital’s medical superintendent but police had taken no action against him. The committee decided to take legal action against those responsible for the death and brought the incident to the notice of Supreme Court registrar, besides asking the district and sessions judge to proceed in the matter.

The committee will also submit a detailed report on the jail to the CJP.
