It’s too late: Imran

By Our Correspondent

LAHORE, Oct 2: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI) Chairperson Imran Khan said on Tuesday opposition lawmakers’ delayed resignations from the assemblies were not likely to impact the political situation in the country.

A press statement released by the party quoted Mr Khan as saying the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) should have quit the assemblies soon after Gen Pervez Musharraf had backed out of his commitment to give up his uniform on Dec 31, 2004.

He said the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) would try to prevent Gen Musharraf from being re-elected to the presidency because such an attempt was unconstitutional.

He said Pakistan was being turned into a banana republic where the dictator’s word was the law and all decisions were taken according to his whims.

He said a public servant could not be allowed to run for any election and the APDM’s decision to quit assemblies was aimed at checking the regime’s unbridled powers. Besides, the opposition sent a message through resignations that it would not become a party to any unconstitutional step.
