HYDERABAD: Protest held against bid to re-elect president

HYDERABAD, Oct 2: The APDM activists staged a protest outside the press club here on Tuesday against what they called unconstitutional bid to re-elect General Pervez Musharraf as the president from the present assemblies and police brutalities against the lawyers, journalists and civil society activists.
Various political parties affiliated with the APDM — STP, PML-N, ANP, Jamaat-i-Islami, AT and JUI — staged a protest march from civil court building to press club. They carried party flags and banners.
Speaking on the occasion, STP leaders, Hote Khan Gadhi and Muzaffar Kalhoro, PML-N leader Hanif Siddiqui, ANP leader Haji Sher Zaman, Abdul Waheed Qureshi of Jamaat-i-Islami, Khalid Dhamrah of JUI-F, AT leader Sajjad Chandio and Abdur Rehman advocate raised full throated slogans against General Musharraf and the government and condemned the wanton attack on lawyers and journalists.
They said that uniform and democracy could not go together and added that as long as the generals were in power, true democracy could not be restored.
They vowed to continue protest till the restoration of the supremacy of Parliament and Constitution and independence of judiciary and press.
In Nawabshah, activists of APDM took out a rally against the Islamabad police excess against lawyers, political worker and journalists.
The rally started from Zila Secretariat PML-N and after passing through different road, terminated at local press club. Protesters were carrying placards and banners and were raising slogans against the government and police.
Speaking to the protesters, Ghulam Mustafa Shah (PML-N), Maulana Hizbullah Khoso (MMA), Suroor Ahmed Qureshi (JI), Qazi Nadeem and others condemned the atrocities of police on lawyers, journalists and political workers.
