UNITED NATIONS, Sept 29: Foreign Secretary Riaz Mohammed Khan has sought the help of the international community in repatriating some 2.5million Afghan refugees from Pakistan and called for a just resolution of the Kashmir dispute.
Mr Khan called on United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon on Saturday and told reporters that he briefed the UN chief about the peace process with India, stressing the need for “intensified efforts to seek a just settlement of the Kashmir dispute”.
I mentioned that both side need to intensified the efforts for a just settlement of the Kashmir dispute, in such a way that it is acceptable to all parties involved, particularly to the people of Kashmir and also the need for involving Kashmiri leaders in the process,” Mr Khan said.
We discussed a number of issues, he said, adding that Mr Moon was very appreciative of Pakistan’s role in the UN, especially with regard to the peace keeping, the chair of G-77 and the UN reform process.
On Afghanistan, Mr Khan said: “I informed him about the formation of a jirga of 50 members, which is basically mandated to reach out to the opposition and bring about peace and reconciliation in the area. Also, I mentioned to him about the refugees and the need for resettling these refugees in their country.”
