Nomination papers’ scrutiny today

By Iftikhar A. Khan

ISLAMABAD, Sept 28: The Election Commission is to scrutinise nomination papers of presidential candidates on Saturday amid tight security and in the background of threat of protests by the lawyers’ community.

Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Qazi Farooq will himself scrutinise the papers in the presence of candidates and their representatives.

Lawyers announced that they would lay siege to the Election Commission in protest against the amendments made to rules for the presidential election.

Representatives of civil society and people belonging to different walks of life have also decided to join the lawyers’ protest.

Strict security measures have been taken to ensure that only candidates, their proposers and seconders and authorised agents go inside the Election Commission premises. Forty-three candidates have filed nomination papers for the presidential election.
