Gas after 24 years

SIALKOT, Sept 27: Third generations of labourers — Sufi Inayatullah and Muhammad Rafiq — have succeeded in getting Sui gas facility at their homes in Daska city after 24 years.

Reports said Sufi Inayat of Chungi No.8 and his neighbour Rafiq had submitted their applications (2/6 and 1/6) with the Sialkot office of the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) on June 7, 1983 for the facility. At that time the SNGPL officials had allegedly demanded Rs10,000 as `bribe’ for laying pipes. Both the poor labourers could not arrange the amount and were driven from pillar to post by the SNGPL Gujranwala and Sialkot offices. Sufi Inayat and Rafiq died one after the other.

Thereafter, Inayat’s elder son Munawar Husain started visited the SNGPL office but to no avail and met his eternal abode. Later Sultan Munawar also became a part of his late grandfather’s struggle and succeeded in getting the gas connection. The family of the late Rafiq were also lucky to get the facility.

Sultan Munawar told Dawn that outgoing Sialkot SNGPL in-charge Muhammad Rizwan Mushtaq took a serious notice of their cases and ordered immediate provision of connections to them. He said had his grandfather given Rs10,000 bribe, he would have got the connection? He said both the families distributed sweets among the local people and offered thanks-giving prayers. — Correspondent
