KARACHI : Labourers fall to death in DHA

KARACHI, Sept 26: Three construction workers died and two others were injured when the scaffolding they were dismantling collapsed at a construction project in the DHA on Wednesday. The scaffolding gave way on the 13th floor.

Clifton SP Azad Khan said that the three labourers fell to death while two others got stranded in the scaffolding at lower levels suffering injuries at the under-construction Creek City project. They were rescued by co-workers and were shifted to hospital for treatment.

The construction workers who died were identified as Mukhtar, Hidyatullah and Badal Khan.

The Clifton SP said a case has not been registered as it was an accident and there is no apparent aspect of negligence involved.

Five die in accidents

Five persons died in separate road accidents in different parts of the city on Wednesday.

An unidentified young man died in a hit-and-run accident on main University Road.

Police said that the accident occurred in the limits of the Sachal police station where the pedestrian was crossing University Road when a fast-moving vehicle knocked him down. The accident occurred near Jauhar Complex, police added.

Police shifted the body to the JPMC for legal formalities.

In another accident, two persons died in a truck-car collision on the Super Highway early Wednesday morning.

Police said the accident occurred near the Sattar Hotel causing the death of both occupants of the car. Police shifted the bodies to a hospital.

The errant truck driver fled the scene, police said. The identities of the dead were not available with the police.

The body of a man was found in the outskirts of the city on the National Highway, police said.

The unidentified man is believed to be a victim of a hit-and-run accident and was crushed by several fast-moving vehicles before being removed from the spot.

In the police limits of PIB police station a motorcyclist was hit by a minibus causing his death. The victim was identified as Ismail, a resident of Essa Nagri.

Doctor shot dead

A professor of pathology of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre was shot dead by unknown assailants outside his clinic in Manzoor Colony on Wednesday evening.

Hospital sources quoting people who rushed the victim to the hospital said the professor was shot in front of his clinic near Awami Chowk in Manzoor Colony, where two assailants on a motorcycle pumped several bullets into the doctor as he was approaching his clinic.

Prof Dr Mubashir Ahmed Shaikh was associated with the department of pathology, JPMC, hospital sources said, adding that he had suffered multiple bullet wounds in the head and chest. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the JPMC emergency ward.

He leaves behind a widow, three daughters and a son.

An eyewitness said it was a targeted killing in which two assailants approached Dr Shaikh and shot him, and rode away.

The doctors’ fraternity expressed shock over the incident, saying that Dr Mubashir Ahmed was a simple professional man having no political ambitions or affiliations.

Following the incident, the police hierarchy of South zone, including the DIG and the SP of Jamshed Town, avoided talking to the press.

The CCPO expressed his ignorance about the incident, saying that it was such a big city that he could not possibly keep track of all such incidents.
