Sanjay to stay free for a month

MUMBAI, Sept 26: Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, sentenced to six years for keeping illegal arms linked to India’s worst bombings, will remain out of jail on a legal technicality for at least another month, his lawyer said on Wednesday.

The macho actor began serving his sentence on July 31 — for getting guns from gangsters linked with the 1993 Mumbai bombings that killed 257 people — but walked out on bail about three weeks later.

He appealed against his sentence in the Supreme Court and was allowed bail until he was served a copy of the judgment by the special Mumbai court which sentenced him. His lawyers contended that they could not argue his case in the absence of a copy of the judgment, which was originally to be served on Thursday. “We don’t expect the judgment copy to be served until end-October,” Dutt’s lawyer Karan Singh said. “So he will be out until then at least.”—Reuters
