KARACHI: 77 booked, 12 sent to jail for profiteering
KARACHI, Sept 25: The city government officials with magisterial powers carried out raids in different towns, imposed Rs489,200 on 77 traders and sent 12 shopkeepers to jail for profiteering.
To check prices, Deputy District Officers (Revenue) and Mukhtiarkars raided some shops in Clifton, Saddar, Lyari, Jamshed Town, Korangi, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Keamari, Site, Gulberg, North Nazimabad, New Karachi, Liaquatabad, Gadap, Malir, Shah Faisal and Landhi on Tuesday.
They booked 77 traders for selling wheat flour on high prices. Nine meat sellers were fined Rs24,700 for overcharging; 19 milk sellers were fined Rs49,500; 16 vegetable sellers Rs13,900 and 68 fruit sellers were fined over Rs26,600 for fleecing consumers.
During the raids, 15 grocery stores were fined Rs10,800 and eight others were booked for Rs22,500.
A total Rs59,000 was imposed as fine on 15 shopkeepers in Clifton and Saddar, 17 challans for Rs7,000 were made in Lyari and 23 shopkeepers were booked in Jamshed Town with a fine of Rs31,600.
The magistrates sent five persons to jail from Shah Faisal Town and three from Bin Qasim Town for overcharging.
In Gulshan-i-Iqbal, a fine of Rs4,500 was imposed on eight traders. In Keamari Rs7,700 (16 shopkeepers), Baldia Town Rs12,000 (seven traders), Site Town Rs11,000 (eight shopkeepers), Gulberg Town Rs11,500 (five retailers), North Nazimabad Town Rs11,900 (13 shopkeepers), Liaquatabad Town Rs18,900 (35 cases), Bin Qasim Town Rs177,000 (nine persons), Malir Town Rs37,100 (10 traders), Shah Faisal Town Rs113,400 (five shopkeepers) and Landhi Town Rs16,700 (10 cases).
So far, a fine of Rs8.351 million has been made in 3,808 cases while 61 traders have been sent to jail for indulging in profiteering during the ongoing campaign.—APP
