HYDERABAD, Sept 25: Twelve students suffered injuries in two successive clashes between rival groups at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, on Tuesday.
Reports said that the two groups used iron rods and stones against each other after some boys’ hooting and booing over a petty issue took a violent turn.
Zayed Brohi, Shamshad Ahmed, Shabbir Palijo, Hemo Kalani, Abdur Razzaq Brohi, Sajid Brohi, Lala Mehran, Ameer Jehan and Mohammad Zain suffered injuries and five of them were admitted to Liaquat Medical Hospital.There are unconfirmed reports that Jamshoro police had detained Shabbir Palijo and Hemo Kalani but the officer in-charge of the police station said that the complainant was present at the police station and they would soon register the FIR.
Reports said that some students also fired on the hospital shattering some windowpanes.
The Jeay Sindh Students federation (JSSF-Arisar group) accused the Sindh People’s Students Federation (SPSF) of attacking their workers. JSSF leader Hafeez Pirzado said in a statement faxed to Dawn that the SPSF workers and members of the Brohi community attacked students belonging to their party seriously injuring Bashir Palijo who was later admitted to LMU hospital.
He alleged that the SPSF and Brohis were also to blame for firing on the hospital.
The JSSF’s central president, Roplo Choliani, Suriah Sindhi and Mir Mushtaq Soomro termed the attack a conspiracy against peaceful atmosphere of the university and accused the students’ welfare officer of being involved in the attack.
They appealed to the students belonging to the two groups to refrain from further clashes.
In another clash in the evening which saw firearms being used on both sides left three students injured outside the gate of university’s hostel. Abdul Razzaq Brohi, Sheeraz Inqalabi and Irfan suffered pellet injuries and were moved to Liaquat University Hospital.
The condition of Irfan was stated to be serious. The students who were admitted to the hospital earlier in the day had left the hospital for fear of police who had cordoned off the hostels to avert further clashes.
