KARACHI, Sept 23: Public fancy four-year-old chestnut colt Quince obliged punters when he powered his way to glory to make it two on the trot in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Running like a champion, the favourite colt outpaced filly Leopard Of Arab by seven lengths to live up to his top billing. He picked up momentum after negotiating the bend and got into the straight run to register a magnificent win.

Trained by M. Aslam Khan, he was smartly ridden home by champion rider M. Nasir to present owner Pir Pagara with a winner.

Colt Shah Pasand finished third while filly Hi Darling completed the frame as the field was reduced to 10 contestants following the withdrawal of Red Rufus.

Barring an exception, six favourites and a co-favourite reigned supreme in a card of eight races.

The women owners also had their share when three of them – Zainab Ali (Mixed Blessing), Beenish Hassan (On Looker) and Zubaida Rehmat (Sonu Love Mani) – returned home satisfied with the winners.

Four-year-old colt Reyan King edged co-favourite colt Moon Raker by seven lengths to claim the featured event. They were chased by Sir Jee and Khyber.

Installed as the favourite in the betting ring, mare Sonu Love Mani beat stable-mate filly Janu Love Inshu by three-quarters-of-a-length to pick up the supporting event. Shan-i-Arab was placed third while Kat Mandu finished a dismal fourth.

After occupying two successive second places Ismail Shah’s mare Closing Argument overcame the bad patch by crossing the finishing post three lengths ahead of NYX under rider Ghulam Shabbir II to win the fifth race.

Favourite colt Captain Cook made amends to pick up the opener beating Yes Chief by five lengths. Similarly, another favourite Mixed Blessing got the better of The Choice Of The Day by three lengths while On Looker overcame Arabian Butter Fly by five lengths.

Nine-year-old bay Daruwala stunned all and sundry when he romped home, beating favourite Bewitched to land the second race.

Trainer Aslam Khan ended the day on a successful note with a treble. Apart from Quince, his other winners were Captain Cook and Daruwala.
