PESHAWAR, Sept 23: All Parties’ Democratic Movement leader Iqbal Zafar Jhagra has said that the opposition was mulling over a plan to besiege the assemblies on Oct 6 to block President Pervez Musharraf’s re-election.
“We condemn arrests of APDM leaders and workers. We will spare no effort to stop Gen Musharraf’s re-election as president,” he told a news conference at the press club here on Sunday.
The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) leader said the leaders of all the parties in the APDM, including Maulana Fazlur Rehman, were unanimous on adopting every option to prevent the re-election and the opposition would resign from the assemblies under that decision.
Flanked by Awami National Psrty’s Ghulam Ahmed Bilour, Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal’s Shabbir Ahmed Khan, Pukhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party’s Dr Said Alam Mahsud and Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf’s Shah Farman, Mr Jhagra said Maulana Rehman had pledged in London to honour all the decisions of the APDM, including resigning from the assemblies and launching a movement to oust Gen Musharraf.
He said Gen Musharraf was unacceptable to the opposition both a civilian or uniformed president.
“The opposition’s resignations will break the electoral college and there will be no justification to hold the election then,” he said.
He said the nation would never forgive the parties or leaders who were making deals or compromises with the military general for saving their governments or sharing power.
“The APDM has decided to hold its next meetings in the Frontier province,” he said.
He said the lawyers and political workers would resist Gen Musharraf’s re-elections both at the central and provincial levels.
He said The PML-N members had submitted their resignations to the central leadership of the party.
Mr Bilour said the arrest of APDM leaders would boost the movement against the Musharraf regime.
He alleged that the chief election commissioner and the government had violated the Constitution and committed contempt of court by amending the elections rules bypassing the Constitution.
He said parliament was dominated by members of the ruling parties, therefore, the Supreme Court should take steps against the unconstitutional and illegal acts of the regime.
