Rybakou breaks lifting world record

CHIANG MAI (Thailand), Sept 22: Andrei Rybakou of Belarus broke his own world record in the men’s 85kg category as he took gold at the world weightlifting championships here on Saturday.

The 25-year-old showed his power in the snatch when he hoisted 187kg on his third attempt to break his own world record of 186kg.

Rybakou had already easily claimed the snatch title with his first lift of 180kg, beating Russian Aslambek Ediev’s 172kg.

Olympic silver medallist Rybakou swept three gold medals with a total of 393kg, with the 206kg record in the jerk. Ediev took silver with 372kg in total - 172kg in the snatch and 200kg in the jerk – with Vadzim Straltsou of Belarus winning bronze with 370kg - 170kg in the snatch and 200 in the jerk.—AFP
