Administrator of Jamia Fareediya arrested

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Sept 19: Security forces have arrested an administrator of the Jamia Fareediya in a midnight raid on Tuesday, police said.

On a tip-off that Abdul Qayyum, who is wanted by the Aabpara police, was present in the seminary, police personnel swarmed the compound and took the accused in custody.

Abdul Qayyum was also one of the 10 Muftis who formed the self-declared Shariat Court at the Lal Masjid.

Acting Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Taimur Ali Khan, when contacted, told Dawn that the administrator had been shifted to the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) centre due to security reasons.

Earlier, Abdul Qayyum was produced before the court on Wednesday that granted his one-day physical remand.

He is wanted by the Aabpara police in three different cases, which were registered during the week-long operation at the Lal Masjid in July, the acting SSP added.

The police said under different FIRs, Abdul Qayyum had been charged with various crimes, including murder and terrorism.

He escaped from Islamabad before the military laid a siege to the Lal Masjid, the police said, adding that he had gone underground, but last night surfaced at Jamia Fareediya.
