TIMERGARA, Sept 19: The power supply to most parts of Lower Dir could not be restored on Wednesday though hundreds of angry people attacked a grid station in Saddu Timergara and set ablaze electric equipment on Tuesday.
Police reached the place and fired gunshots and teargas shells to dispersed the angry people protesting against the outage. Two people were injured during the clash with police.
They were taken to the local hospital.
Pesco officials told Dawn that protesters had set on fire 15 power transformers. They said that Pesco engineers were trying to restore the supply of electricity to the affected areas of Saddu, Khungai, Timergara, Balambat, Officers’ Colony and Maidan.Hospitals in Timergara and Maidan have been without power for 24 hours. Half of Lower Dir remained in darkness.
Police claimed to have arrested 21 protesters. Residents of Maidan staged a sit-in outside the Lal Qilla Maidan police station and demanded their release.
Sources said that unknown assailants had fired five rockets on the police station on Tuesday night. Two policemen were injured in the attack.
Police have registered a case against 450 people belonging to different political parties and organisations of Maidan.
