SC responsible if insane person becomes presidential candidate

By Our Political Correspondent

LAHORE, Sept 18: The Supreme Court should be held responsible if some criminal or insane person becomes a presidential candidate as a result of the recent changes to the election rules, Dr Sher Afgan Niazi, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, says.

He said the rules had been changed in the light of two Supreme Court judgments delivered in 2002 and 2005.

The minister said all state institutions were duty-bound to act in aid of the Supreme Court, and this was exactly what the ministry of parliamentary affairs had done by amending the rules for the presidential election.

The minister said it was the job of the two apex court benches to see what the implications of their judgments could be.

Dr Niazi alleged some ‘political lawyers’ were pushing the Supreme Court towards confrontation with the president.
